Howard woman dies in Christmas Eve crash
HOWARD — A Howard woman died Christmas Eve from injuries suffered in a crash about a half-mile east of town.
Around 3 p.m. Tuesday, Brandon Stoltz, 21, of Bridgewater, was driving a Chevy Cavalier south on 435th Avenue and stopped at a stop sign at the junction with state Highway 34. It was snowing heavily, said Miner County Deputy Mike Clary, and Stoltz continued southbound on 435th.
Luther Dittman, 22, of Huron, was driving east on Highway 34. Stoltz did not see Dittman’s white Pontiac Grand Prix in the snow, Clary said.
Dittman’s vehicle struck the passenger side of Stoltz’s vehicle.
Stoltz’s grandmother, Gertrude VanPelt, 85, was a passenger in his vehicle. She suffered fatal injuries in the crash.
Stoltz, Dittman, and Dittman’s wife and infant all suffered minor injuries in the crash. Everyone was wearing a seat belt.
A Miner County ambulance transported everyone to a hospital in Madison, Clary said.
Stoltz was cited for failure to yield.
The Howard Fire Department also responded to the scene.
