Mitchell City Councilman Dan Allen to resign

Mitchell City Council Vice President Dan Allen will resign effective Jan. 21.

Allen, 54, submitted his resignation letter Monday to Mayor Ken Tracy. Allen, who has represented Ward 2 since he was appointed in May 2006, is building a new home and will move out of his current ward, which is located in southeast Mitchell.

“We’ve got a good council,” Allen said Monday in an interview with The Daily Republic. “I’m not disappointed I’m leaving. It’s just one of those things.”

Allen said he will leave his position after the second council meeting in January, which will be Jan. 21, a Tuesday, due to Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Jan. 20. Council meetings are typically held the first and third Mondays of each month.

Tracy will announce Allen’s resignation at tonight’s council meeting, scheduled for 7:00 at City Hall.

“I think Dan has been an excellent council person,” Tracy said in an interview Monday with The Daily Republic. “We’re certainly going to miss his services.”

Tracy said he will appoint a replacement to take Allen’s seat on the council. The appointee will face an election in June, along with three other council members — Councilman Steve Rice, Councilman Phil Carlson and Councilwoman Susan Tjarks, whose positions are all scheduled for election. Council members serve three-year terms.

Allen will move to Ward 3, located in northeast Mitchell. He said he has not decided whether he will ever run for a council seat in his new ward.

“I’ll keep that option open,” he said.
