A family from the Elkton and Brookings area staying at the Ramada had returned around 7 p.m. from hunting and was transferring guns from one vehicle to another, said Sgt. Dave Beintema, of the Mitchell Police Division. The father asked his 10-year-old son to move one of the shotguns. Beintema said the boy’s 5-year-old sister came up behind him and somehow got her finger on the trigger.

The gun went off into the air.

“We’re lucky we didn’t have a shooting there,” Beintema said.

The dad grabbed the shotgun and engaged the safety. The dad checked on the kids and no one was injured, but they were shaken up, Beintema said.

Law enforcement did not issue any citations, he said, and there was no damage.

Meanwhile, state Game, Fish and Parks Conservation Officer Andy Petersen said there were no hunting-related accidents in the Mitchell area over the opening weekend of pheasant season.
