Skateboarder injured on Sanborn Blvd.; police warn of danger

A 20-year-old Mitchell man was injured Tuesday evening when he fell off his skateboard on Sanborn Boulevard.

The Mitchell Police Division received a call about 9:30 p.m. that Wilson Marcellus Dent was lying on the roadway in the 200 block of South Sanborn and “flailing around on his back,” said Detective Lt. Don Everson. Dent was found just off the bridge on Sanborn that goes over the railroad tracks.

He had a head injury, but was conscious when officers arrived, Everson said.

Dent was cited for underage possession of alcohol because the officer smelled alcohol on his breath.

“He appears to have been drinking prior to his accident,” Everson said.

He was transported by Mitchell Ambulance to Avera Queen of Peace Hospital.

“We have heard rumors that juveniles have been skateboarding on Sanborn at nighttime,” Everson said. “We haven’t seen it, but it could be the case.”

Although Dent wasn’t seriously injured, Everson warns that others could be if they are not careful. He said youth and adults alike should remember it is harder to see skateboarders at night.

“If someone is doing this, it’s a very dangerous activity,” he said of skateboarding down the bridge on Sanborn or on the road in general. “People come over that hill very quickly and someone could get run over while skateboarding or if they’re on the ground, like Dent was.”
