Names released in Wednesday double-fatal crash

MITCHELL – Authorities have released the names of two people who died in a two-vehicle crash Wednesday on state Highway 37 about six miles south of Mitchell.

Sara ClaggettSara Ann Claggett, 23, of Tripp, was southbound driving a 2006 Saturn Relay. The vehicle drifted into the northbound lane, according to the state Department of Public Safety, and collided with a northbound 2004 GMC Sierra pickup driven by Donald Julius Geidel, 82, of Dimock.

Both vehicles caught fire, and both drivers died in the crash. Neither was wearing a seat belt.

Claggett’s 2-year-old daughter, Lauryn Rene Claggett, was in a child safety seat in the back seat of the Saturn. Witnesses were able to pull the child from the vehicle. She was taken to a Mitchell hospital with injuries described as life-threatening and then transported to a Sioux Falls hospital.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating. The Davison County Sheriff’s Office, Mitchell Fire Department and Ethan Fire Department assisted.
