EMERY -- A Wednesday afternoon fire at the Cargill elevator in Emery resulted in no injuries and little damage, according to a company representative.

Jay Olson, regional operations leader for Cargill, said the fire started about 2 p.m. Wednesday in the elevator's train-loading system, which had been cleaned and shut down for about two weeks for annual maintenance. According to Olson, contractors were installing new material, and as they were welding, they believe sparks from the welding smoldered on the plastic liner that had been recently installed below. No one was injured, and no grain or grain bins were involved in the fire, Olson said.

Olson said Cargill will conduct an investigation today to determine the cause, and to assess the damages, which Olson described as minor. "We'll have no problems being ready for harvest," Olson said.

The Emery and Mitchell fire departments responded, and stayed at the scene for about two hours, Olson said.
