GLAD YOU ASKED: Bat problem common in Mitchell, city official says

Q. My niece and her husband are living in a rental until their new house can be moved to its new site. I recently found out the rental is infested with bats, which don't stay in the attic and roof, but also fly around the downstairs living area. What can be done about this?

A. According to Mitchell Animal Control Officer John Parker, an exterminator will have to deal with a bat infestation of that magnitude. The bats will likely be led out of a one-way trap and then any holes or cracks in the house need to be filled, Parker said.

"They seal it up so they can't get back in the house," he said.

Bats are a common nuisance in Mitchell, especially during the summer months, according to Parker.

"This time of year, we're handling bat calls virtually every day," he said.

The city is not able to deal with large-scale bat infestations, but does handle isolated incidents, Parker said.
