Mitchell man faces burglary, identity theft charges
A local man has been charged with identity theft and burglary for allegedly stealing another person's debit card and making $122.48 in purchases at businesses in Mitchell.
Cale Carl Bender, 27, of Mitchell, was arrested May 17 and charged with four counts of identity theft, a felony with a maximum punishment of two years in prison and a $4,000 fine. Bender is also charged with first-degree burglary, a felony with a maximum punishment of 25 years in prison and a $50,000 fine.
According to court documents, the victim reported four unexpected charges to her debit card on April 19 and 20, one charge to Freedom Gas Station, two to M&H Gas Station and one to County Fair. The charges totaled $122.48.
Surveillance footage from the businesses show Bender using the victim's debit card to make the purchases, court documents say. Bender later admitted he entered the victim's unlocked attached garage and took her debit card out of her purse on April 19 and returned it the next morning, court documents say.
