Seafood boil is first-of-its-kind event for Mitchell
Fresh seafood can be hard to come by in South Dakota. That's why the Highland Conference Center and Pirogues Catering planned their first-ever seafood boil for Friday night.
"We thought it'd be a good idea," said Jim Tipton, owner of Pirogues Catering, which does all of the catering for the Highland Conference Center. "A lot of people have never really had fresh shrimp or fresh crawfish around here."
In addition to flying in fresh seafood, Tipton, originally from Louisiana, said all the food -- corn, potatoes, shrimp, crawfish, crab and more -- is cooked together, then served on a platter.
People can then dive into whichever item they like.
"In Louisiana, when people get together for seafood, they do it this way -- everybody sits around the table and joins in," he said. "We just kind of wanted to have an event that brings everybody together."
Tipton said event organizers hope it becomes an annual affair, and estimated about 150 tickets had been sold as of Thursday evening.
The seafood boil will have seatings at 5:30, 7 and 8:15 p.m. Friday at the Highland Conference Center, Mitchell.
Reservations can be made for groups of two to 10. Tickets are $35 each, and Tipton said tickets will be sold until about 4:30 p.m. After that, he said it just depends.
"They can check for tickets at the door; we just can't guarantee there will be any left," he said.
