Firefighter dies battling blaze in Black Hills of South Dakota
STURGIS, S.D. -- A firefighter died Friday afternoon, Sept. 7, while fighting a blaze in the small town of Tilford between Rapid City and Sturgis in the Black Hills of South Dakota.
Another person was also missing and a Meade County Sheriff's deputy was transported to the hospital as a result of the same incident, Rapid City Fire Department Lt. Jim Bussell told the Rapid City Journal.
The Sturgis Fire Department was sent about 4 p.m. to Tilford for a report of a structure fire.
When firefighters arrived they found the structure fully involved and the fire was spreading to other outbuildings in the area. As of Friday night at 8 p.m. firefighters continued to battle the blaze, said the Journal..
Bussell said the firefighter "died in the line of duty," while fighting the blaze. His name was being withheld pending notification of family.
The fire crews had to deal with downed power lines and several propane tanks while fighting the fire. At least one of the propane tanks exploded, according to reports.
