Mitchell schools opening one hour late
Mitchell School District and John Paul II Elementary will be opening one hour late Friday.
Superintendent Joe Graves decided early Friday morning to delay the start of school after a slow, steady winter storm dropped 4.2 inches of snow in Mitchell.
According to the National Weather Service, Mitchell set a daily record Thursday for most snow on the date Feb. 8. That broke a record set in 1994.
The city of Mitchell also declared a snow emergency. That means all vehicles must be removed from snow emergency routes by 5 a.m. or they are subject to ticket or towing. The city plans on clearing east and west streets starting at 8 a.m. today. Then, the city will move to north and south streets.
