Mitchell man sees girl climb from car window with his wallet, phone

Three juveniles were detained by police Thursday after a person reported seeing a girl climb out of an open window on a vehicle.

Patrol Sgt. Joel Reinesch said the call came in at 3:46 p.m. from 721 E. Fourth Ave. in Mitchell. A resident there was mowing the lawn when he saw a female juvenile crawl out of his vehicle window. He spoke with that girl and two other juveniles, and noticed the girl was holding his wallet and cell phone.

The Mitchell Traffic Division happened to be in the area at the time and assisted in locating the children, Reinesch said.

"All the juveniles were found quickly after our arrival, all within a block of where the incident took place," he said.

As of Thursday evening, the Mitchell Police Division was trying to contact the juveniles' parents to get permission to talk further with the children.

Reinesch added that officers found many other items in the juveniles' possession that made them suspicious it was stolen property.

The man who called in the incident got his wallet and cell phone back, Reinesch said.

As of Friday night, there was no additional information regarding the case. If the juveniles are charged with anything, they will be petitioned into juvenile court.
