37 horses released at Stanley County Fairgrounds

PIERRE (AP) — Authorities say they have a "person of interest" in a case in which 37 horses were let loose at the Stanley County Fairgrounds early Sunday.

Chief Deputy Sheriff Greg Swanson says the 24-year-old man is in custody on an aggravated assault charge for allegedly threatening someone at the fairgrounds with a pitchfork, but he hasn't been charged in the horse case. The investigation is continuing.

The horses owned by a Wounded Knee man were released from a barn about 2 a.m. Sunday. Swanson says some were race horses. The horses roamed the Pierre and Fort Pierre area before being rounded up.

Swanson says six horses suffered injuries and two might not be able to race again. A sheriff's office vehicle also was damaged when a horse collided with it.
