Platte man gets prison for child sex abuse

LAKE ANDES — A Platte man will spend 30 days in prison for committing felony child abuse in 2011.

Kip DeGroot, 23, was sentenced Monday to a five-year prison sentence, but Judge Bruce Anderson suspended all but 30 days, which DeGroot will serve immediately. He had 10 days from Monday to report to the Charles Mix County Sheriff’s Office to be transported to prison.

According to the terms of the suspension, DeGroot must also serve one day in jail each year for eight years on Nov. 17, the anniversary of the incident for which he was arrested. This is separate from the 30-day prison sentence.

Court documents say DeGroot picked up a minor girl on or about Nov. 17, 2011, at her residence at 3 a.m. and engaged in contact of a sexual nature.

DeGroot pleaded guilty to exposing a minor to foreseeable harm, which is classified under abuse or cruelty to a minor.

He was originally indicted in July 2012 on a fourth-degree rape charge, which accused him of being at least three years older than the victim and sexually penetrating a person who was at least 13 but less than 16, and for furnishing alcohol to a minor younger than 18.

DeGroot is also ordered to pay $5,431.15 in restitution.
