Chase in Buffalo County ends with one dead

FORT THOMPSON — Federal officials are seeking an Eagle Butte man who may have information regarding a chase and fatal shooting that happened Wednesday in Buffalo County.

The FBI wants to speak with Jason Garreau, 27, said Minneapolis Division FBI spokesman Kyle Loven.

Loven also confirmed Thursday a man was killed by law enforcement after the chase but declined to release the deceased man’s name.

He said the bureau is in charge of an investigation into the pursuit. He is unsure whether the chase was high-speed, he said.

“No law enforcement were injured,” Loven said. “But there was a person who engaged law enforcement who was killed at the scene.”

The person who was shot and killed also fired shots at law enforcement, Loven said.

The pursuit began on South Dakota Highway 34 in Buffalo County. The highway crosses the Crow Creek Indian Reservation, but Loven did not know if the chase entered the reservation or whether the shooting happened on the reservation.

A tip to The Daily Republic indicated that a U.S. marshal was involved in the incident. Loven confirmed the Marshals Service’s involvement but declined to say whether a marshal fired the fatal shot.

If anyone sees Garreau or knows his whereabouts, Loven asks the public to call the FBI in Pierre at (605) 224-1331 or to call local law enforcement. Garreau is approximately 6 feet, 2 inches tall and weighs between 200 and 225 pounds.

Garreau was sentenced in federal court in December 2010 for possessing a stolen gun and ordered to serve 12 months of home confinement. In May 2013, he pleaded guilty to possession of a controlled substance in federal court.
