Mitchell man charged with DWU dorm burglary, assault
A Mitchell man is accused of stealing a key he used to enter and remain in a dorm room, uninvited, at Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell.
Riley Chohon, 19, is also accused of assaulting his former girlfriend and a juvenile male when he entered the dorm room Oct. 13. He was allegedly asked to leave many times but refused.
According to court documents, Chohon took a key for the dorm room from the victim’s roommate without permission. He got into an argument with his ex-girlfriend when he entered the room.
He is accused of pushing his ex-girlfriend into the wall during the argument and punching the male, causing a bloody lip. The male’s head also hit the wall when he was punched, court documents say.
Chohon is charged with first-degree burglary, which carries a maximum penalty upon conviction of 25 years in prison, a $50,000 fine or both.
He is also charged with domestic simple assault, a misdemeanor, because he and his ex-girlfriend lived together for two and a half weeks in August. He is also charged with simple assault against the male and underage possession and consumption of alcohol, both misdemeanors.
