Laundromat robbery suspect taken into custody
Mitchell authorities have taken a suspect into custody who allegedly robbed a laundromat early Wednesday.
The Mitchell Department of Public Safety said a robbery occurred at Plaza Cleaners at 822 N. Main St. at about 3:30 a.m. Wednesday. A suspect was taken into custody around 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in the northern part of the city.
Mitchell Police Division Sgt. Dean Knippling said Wednesday afternoon that a suspect from the robbery was in custody for an unrelated crime. Police said no official charges had been made in the robbery and more information is expected on Thursday.
The suspect was identified as a male standing at approximately 5-foot-10 with a thin build. Witnesses said he was wearing a blue-gray hooded shirt that was pulled over his face and was wearing tan pants, tan and white Nike deck shoes and was wearing a bluish-black backpack.
Authorities said the robbery suspect then headed north from Plaza Cleaners and made contact with a subject behind Coborn’s at 1800 N. Main St., and attempted to rob an individual there before leaving the area.
No injuries were reported in either incident. Surveillance footage from Plaza Cleaners showed witnesses were on the scene when the crime occurred.
As a precaution during the search for the suspect, authorities locked down Mitchell High School, Gertie Belle Rogers Elementary and the Mitchell Middle School, along with Mitchell Christian School and the Mitchell Recreation Center.
Individuals with information regarding the crime are advised to call the Mitchell Police Division offices at 605-995-8400.
