Mitchell woman gets DUI after trying to eat hotdog, hitting tree

A Mitchell woman was arrested for drunken driving Saturday after she crashed a car into a tree.

Ashley Hellman, 26, was driving a 2008 Pontiac Grand Prix north in the 800 block of North Wisconsin Street when she attempted to eat a hotdog while driving after she had been drinking at the bar all night, said Sgt. Mike Koster. Around 2:15 a.m., she veered off the road and struck a tree. Airbags deployed when the vehicle hit the tree.

Hellman suffered minor injuries to her thumb, wrist and ankle, but refused medical treatment or transport.

She was arrested for DUI, Koster said.

Mitchell Police Division estimated $50 in damage to the tree, $100 damage to a chainlink fence and $6,000 to the vehicle.

Mitchell Ambulance and police responded to the scene.
