Iona man identified in fatal ATV-semi crash
GREGORY — An Iona, South Dakota man has been identified as the person who died Saturday in an ATV-semi truck collision north of Gregory.
Vincent Svoboda, 81, was driving a 2018 Polaris Ranger XP 900 ATV when he collided with a semi truck and was ejected from his vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The crash occurred around 6 p.m. Saturday in Lyman County, 2 miles north of Iona at the intersection of 265th Street and South Dakota Highway 47. The crash happened about 26 miles north of Gregory.
According to the South Dakota Department of Public Safety, Svoboda was northbound on Highway 47 when the he started to slow down as he neared the intersection of 265th Street. A northbound 2011 Freightliner semi truck, hauling a flatbed full of concrete culverts, began to merge into the passing lane to avoid hitting the ATV. But the Svoboda also merged into the passing lane as he started to make a left-hand turn. The two vehicles then collided.
Liban Gabre, 30, of Tukwila, Washington, was the semi-truck driver. He was wearing a seatbelt and was not injured.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
