PUKWANA—A Wisconsin woman said she fell asleep behind the wheel, leading to a single-vehicle crash into an overpass bridge on Interstate 90 in Brule County on Saturday.

According to the South Dakota Department of Public Safety, the crash occurred at mile marker 272 at 3:35 p.m., 1 mile south of Pukwana when a 2017 Chevrolet Impala was traveling eastbound on I-90.

Kris De Clerc, 60, of Green Bay, Wis., was driving the vehicle, which entered the median and hit the guardrail cable. The vehicle spun around and hit the center pillar for the South Dakota Highway 50 overpass.

De Clerc suffered minor injuries, while a 59-year-old female passenger received serious, non-life threatening injuries. Both individuals were taken to the Sanford Chamberlain Medical Center. Both occupants were wearing a seat belt and charges are pending against De Clerc.

The South Dakota Department of Transportation will have the bridge inspected, and the South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating. Other responding agencies included Chamberlain Police Department, Brule County Sheriff's Office, Pukwana Fire Department and Missouri Valley Ambulance.
