Education Standards Board sets 2018 meeting schedule
Members of state government's Board of Education Standards agreed Monday on their meeting schedule for 2018. It calls for:
• Friday, Jan. 26, Rapid City; Monday, March 19, Pierre; Tuesday, May 8, Vermillion; Monday, July 16, Pierre; Monday, Sept. 17, Aberdeen; and Monday, Nov. 19, Sioux Falls.
All meetings start at 9 a.m. local time. The board plans to also meet at 1 p.m. May 8 with state government's Board of Regents, whose members govern South Dakota's public universities and special schools.
The preliminary plan had the education board at Pierre in January and at Rapid City in March, but the schedule reached Monday flip-flops those two meetings.
There still could be changes. "If there are new sets of hearings to go through, we'll make adjustments accordingly," board president Don Kirkegaard, of Sturgis, said during the board's meeting in Sioux Falls. The session was live-streamed.
The Senate Education Committee plans to hold confirmation hearings Jan. 18 on the governor's two new appointees, Aberdeen Superintendent Becky Guffin and former state Rep. Jacqueline Sly, of Rapid City, a retired teacher.
They replace 11-year veteran Kirkegaard, whom Gov. Dennis Daugaard recently chose to be South Dakota's new secretary of education, and Glenna Fouberg, of Aberdeen.
Fouberg, a former teacher of the year for South Dakota, served 19 years on the state board.
Kirkegaard is superintendent of the Meade School District and previously was at Britton and Bristol. He starts as state secretary Jan. 1.
The governor announced Oct. 13 that Melody Schopp shall retire Dec. 15 after seven years as secretary. Schopp worked 17 years at the state department and was an elementary school teacher for 23 years in South Dakota.
