MHS newspaper, yearbook earn awards at high school press convention
BROOKINGS — The Mitchell High School student-run newspaper, The Kernel, and the Mitchell High School Yearbook class has won 11 awards.
During Wednesday's South Dakota High School Activities Association high school press convention in Brookings, The Kernel was given an "excellent" rating in the newspaper category. Staff on The Kernel also earned individual awards.
Senior Masey Lambert earned "superior" ratings for her submissions in school activity photo and sports photo and she earned two "excellent" ratings for news writing and general news.
Abbie Lambert, a senior, earned two "superior" ratings for sports photo and general news writing.
Senior Rachel Belau got a "superior" rating for feature story; Maren Smith — a junior — earned a "superior" rating for general news writing; and senior Dillon Adams picked up a "superior" rating for sports writing.
Abbie and Masey Lambert are the editors of The Kernel, which is facilitated staff at The Daily Republic.
Mitchell's yearbook, The Maize, was rated as "excellent" in the awards ceremony. The Mitchell High School yearbook adviser is Gretchen Smith.
Yearbooks from the 2015-2016 school year, and the first four newspapers of the current school year were submitted by schools across the state.
