Shoplifting string in Mitchell shut down
Mitchell police have arrested four people after a string of shopliftings Monday at five local businesses.
Camille Cournoyer, 35; Jennifer Traversie, 43; Russell Wright, 48; and John Abdo, 50; all of Sioux Falls, were arrested Monday after allegedly taking items totalling $2,700 from Campbell Supply, Goodwill, JC Penney, Coborn's Superstore, Family Dollar and Shopko in Mitchell, said Patrol Sgt. Terry Reyelts.
At about 3:30 p.m., a gold Chrysler Town and Country minivan, registered to Cournoyer, was stopped by Mitchell police near the intersection of Fourth Avenue and Gamble Street in Mitchell, less than 10 minutes after Shopko Loss Prevention reported a theft to police.
The four individuals were taken to the police department, where they admitted to traveling to Mitchell for the purpose of shoplifting, Reyelts said.
Police searched the vehicle and allegedly found stolen items from each of the five stores, which included clothing, shoes, movies, food and various household goods, believed to have been taken between 12:30 and 3:30 p.m.
Reyelts said investigators do not believe anyone else was involved.
"At this point, we believe this one's what it appears on its face, these four traveling to multiple local businesses and conducting these thefts," Reyelts said.
Mitchell investigators Brian Larson and Dan Fechner investigated the case.
All four individuals were initially charged with grand theft valued between $1,000 and $2,500, a class 6 felony, punishable upon conviction by up to two years in prison and a $4,000 fine, as the value of the items was initially thought to be less than $2,500.
Reyelts said the suspects' charges could be changed to grand theft valued between $2,500 and $5,000, a class 5 felony, punishable upon conviction by up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
