Woman found dead in Mitchell apartment

Mitchell police are investigating the suspicious death of a 49-year-old woman.

After an autopsy was completed Tuesday, officials identified the woman as Janie Sue McDougal and then ruled her death suspicious.

Around 11:30 p.m. Monday, a neighbor called law enforcement concerned there was a woman dead at 615 S. Main St., Apt. 3, said Detective Lt. Don Everson, of the Mitchell Police Division.

Officials responded and found the woman dead in her apartment shortly thereafter. Everson said Tuesday morning there were no obvious signs of foul play. The death was deemed suspicious due to the results of the autopsy and the investigation, Everson said. He said the investigation is ongoing and could not release any details.

Final autopsy results won’t be available for several weeks, he said.

“The biggest issue is that the labs that conduct toxicology on tissues are on the East Coast, so it takes longer,” Everson said.

The Mitchell Police Division is asking for any information regarding people coming or going from this apartment or any activity at this apartment on Monday. Anybody with information regarding the death of McDougal can contact the Mitchell Police Division at 605-995-8400 or Mitchell Area Crime Stoppers Inc. at 605 996-1700.
