The company that once owned the Dakota Pork plant in Mitchell is under the same corporate umbrella as the current inhabitant of the plant.

American Foods Group, based in Green Bay, Wis., became a subsidiary of Rosen’s Diversified Inc., of Fairmont, Minn., in 2005. American Foods is a meat producer, dealing mostly in beef.

American Foods purchased Dakota Pork in Mitchell in 1987 and closed the plant in 2005. The company said it would focus on its beef business and discontinue its pork processing business.

The closing of Dakota Pork put 295 employees out of work just 10 days before Christmas 2005.

The plant now houses Performance Pet Products, which makes high-end dog and cat foods and is also owned by Rosen’s Diversified.

“Rosen’s Diversified has a great track record. Don’t associate it with Dakota Pork’s previous owners. Rosen’s has been a pleasure to deal with when they acquired Performance Pet Products,” said Bryan Hisel, executive director of the Mitchell Area Development Corp. and the Mitchell Area Chamber of Commerce.

Rosen’s acquired Performance Pet shortly after American Foods, according to its website.

Hisel said there’s no hint that Performance Pet may go the way of Dakota Pork. He said Performance Pet has been expanding, including adding warehouse space in the former Syncom building near Interstate 90.

Several calls and emails to Rosen’s Diversified, American Foods Group and Performance Pet Products went unreturned this week.

American Foods Group was in the news recently when it filed an unsuccessful bid for the bankrupt and closed Northern Beef Packers plant in Aberdeen. The San Francisco-based investment banking firm White Oak Global Advisors submitted the winning $44.3 million bid. About $115 million was originally invested in the plant’s construction and equipment.
