The two collided at the intersection, which is uncontrolled.

Both drivers said they didn’t see the other coming, said Lt. Paul Gerken of the South Dakota Highway Patrol.

Both vehicles ended up in the northeast ditch and Muntefering’s vehicle struck a utility pole.

Emergency personnel had to extricate Muntefering and his passenger, Craig Muntefering, 34, from the Dodge pickup. Both were injured and transported by Armour Ambulance to Avera St. Benedict Hospital in Parkston. They were later flown to a Sioux Falls hospital, Gerken said.

Thuringer was not injured in the crash and was wearing his seat belt, Gerken said.

Floyd Muntefering was not wearing a seat belt and a citation is pending against him, Gerken said.

Also responding to the scene were Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Parkston Fire and Ambulance and Delmont Fire.
