New Mitchell retail center to hold 4-5 businesses
A retail center under construction in southern Mitchell could eventually hold four to five local and national businesses, according to the developer.
Mike Van Buskirk, of the Sioux Fallsbased Van Buskirk Companies, declined to name which businesses are interested in moving into the new retail center, but said the company is close to finalizing multiple deals.
Construction of the 16,750-square-foot retail center began in late August at a site located directly north of Menards. The basic shell of the building is expected to be finished before the end of the year, which will allow businesses to move in by early 2014, Van Buskirk said.
The city’s growing retail area south of Interstate 90 attracted the company to the project, which has been in the works for about a year, Van Buskirk said.
“We identified a need and found some tenants that were interested,” he said. “That’s what spurred us to do it.” The estimated cost of the project is $1,000,900, according to a building permit filed with the city of Mitchell. Estimated costs listed on building permits include only the structure and not other factors such as dirt work, heating, ventilation, air conditioning and plumbing. Therefore, the estimate is lower than the real cost of the project.
“Mitchell is growing and has demand for more housing and services all the time,” he said. The concrete foundation of the building is nearly done, which means the frame of the building will be put up soon, Van Buskirk said.
“We’re excited to be there,” he said. “We’re excited about Mitchell. It’s a good story out there.” Van Buskirk Companies also built Wheatridge Apartments in Mitchell.
