South Dakota State Fair ends 5-day run in Huron

HURON (AP) -- The South Dakota State Fair has ended its five-day run in Huron, a stretch that saw unseasonably warm weather in the state.

Final numbers won't be in for a while, but it appears the heat last week did not have too much of an effect on fairgoers, KOKK radio reported.

"They may have hesitated a little bit to come out during the daytime hours, but once the sun went down we had some great attendance," Fair Manager Jerome Hertel said.

A Saturday night concert by the Eli Young Band and the Casey Donahew Band even broke records for the fair, he said.

One big change for the fair this year was restrictions on golf carts.

"We got a lot of comments from people who appreciated not having to look over their shoulder and worry about a golf cart" running into them, Hertel said.

Last year's fair drew 192,000 people, and fair officials have said they hope to hit the 200,000 mark his year.
