Sturgis couple accused of scamming foreign workers
RAPID CITY (AP) — A Sturgis couple is accused of lying about taking money from foreign workers to help them find jobs in motels and resorts in the Black Hills.
The Rapid City Journal reported 50-year-old Scott Kaubisch and 53-year-old Sheila Kaubisch were indicted by a federal grand jury for fraud.
Authorities say the couple operated an employment agency out of their home, and recruited workers from the Philippines from 2009 to 2011.
The Kaubisches are accused of illegally charging at least five workers between $500 and $4,000 for helping them apply visas that permitted them to work in the United States for one year. It is illegal to charge a fee to help with visa applications.
The Kaubisches are accused of deliberately lying about accepting a fee from workers.
