Lead police: Man kills himself during park celebration
LEAD (AP) -- Police in the Black Hills city of Lead say a 67-year-old man killed himself with a gun in a park filled with several hundred people for a July 4th celebration.
The Black Hills Pioneer reports the incident occurred at Manuel Brothers Park at about 7:35 p.m. Witnesses say the man was being escorted from the park by law enforcement officers just before the shot.
Lead resident Misael Rivera says he was standing about three feet from the man when he heard police say "put the gun down."
Witness Trever Neal says officers tried to stop the man but he shot himself. He was taken by ambulance transported to Lead-Deadwood Regional Hospital but died. The man's name was not being released until family members could be notified.
