GOP Big Three in Mitchell today

Gov. Dennis Daugaard1 / 3
Marty Jackley2 / 3
Mike Rounds3 / 3

Three high-profile South Dakota Republican politicians will visit Mitchell today, the day of the county party's Lincoln Day Dinner.

Former governor and current U.S. Senate candidate Mike Rounds will be the featured speaker at the Davison County Republican Party's annual fundraiser tonight at the County Fair Banquet Room. The event begins with a social at 6 p.m.

"I'm really excited to have former governor Rounds speaking," said Phil Carlson, of Mitchell and chairman of the county party.

Rounds is seeking the seat that will be vacated by retiring Democratic Sen. Tim Johnson.

Gov. Dennis Daugaard will also be in town today but will likely not make it to the dinner, due to a prior engagement in Vermillion. Daugaard will speak to the Mitchell Rotary Club at noon at the Ramada and visit with The Daily Republic editorial board afterward at the newspaper's office. South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley plans to attend the Lincoln Day Dinner, according to his office, and will speak to The Daily Republic editorial board prior to the event. State GOP Chairman Craig Lawrence will also attend the dinner.

"I'm excited to have all three big names here in Mitchell at the same time," Carlson said. "It's a fantastic opportunity for people to get out and hear how government is going."

A Lincoln Day Dinner, "named for our party's favorite son, Abraham Lincoln," is something many county GOP organizations hold to promote the party, raise money and hear from elected officials and candidates, Carlson said.

Tickets are $25 and a few will be available at the door.
