Multimedia performance honors Langston Hughes

VERMILLION (AP) -- The University of South Dakota is hosting a multimedia concert performance of Langston Hughes' kaleidoscopic jazz.

"Ask Your Mama: Twelve Moods for Jazz" is slated to begin at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Farber Hall.

The multimedia concert is Hughes' homage in verse and music to the struggle for artistic and social freedom at home and abroad at the beginning of the 1960s.

A 12-part epic poem, "Ask Your Mama," is scored with musical cues played by the Ron McCurdy Quartet drawn from blues and Dixieland, gospel songs, boogie woogie, bebop, progressive jazz, Latin "cha cha," Afro-Cuban mambo music, German lieder, Jewish liturgy, West Indian calypso and African drumming.

The multimedia concert is free and open to the public.
