Mike Miller Classic host to 5 out-of-state, 8 SD teams

Below is a list of teams participating in the third annual Mike Miller Classic, along with capsules of each team. The classic has 13 teams playing this year with five out-of-state teams and eight South Dakota teams.

Coronado High School, Henderson, Nev.

Coach: Jeff Kaufman, sixth season

Record: 5-3

Notes: This season, the Cougars are averaging 71 points per game. The team is led by senior guard Justice Augmon, who is averaging 25.1 points per game. Jordan Willis, a 6-foot-5 senior forward, leads Coronado in rebounding with an average of 8.5 rebounds per game.

Schedule: Coronado vs. Mitchell, 8:30 p.m. today; Coronado vs. The Rock, 7 p.m. Friday.

DeLaSalle High School, Minneapolis

Coach: Dave Thorson, 17th season

Record: 2-0

Notes: DeLaSalle High School is participating in the Mike Miller Classic for the third consecutive year. The Islanders return three starters from last year's Class 3A championship team. Junior power forward Reid Travis is a top recruit for the class of 2014. He has offers from top Division I schools, including Purdue, Stanford, Boston College and Minnesota.

Schedule: DeLaSalle vs. Our Savior New American, 5:30 p.m. Friday; DeLaSalle vs. White River, 7 p.m. Saturday.

La Lumiere High School, LaPorte, Ind.

Coach: Alan Huss, second season

Record: 12-2

Notes: This is La Lumiere's second consecutive appearance at the Mike Miller Classic. Last season, the team was named a top 10 team by ESPN. This year, the Lakers are led by Detrick Mostella, who committed to Oklahoma State. La Lumiere has seven players who are taller than 6-foot-5 on its roster.

Schedule: La Lumiere vs. Watertown, 8:30 p.m. Friday; La Lumiere vs. Sioux Falls Washington, 5:30 Saturday.

Our Savior New American, Centereach, N.Y.

Coach: Ron Stelzer, 15th season

Record: 4-1

Notes: Last week, Our Savior New American took fourth place in the Tarkanian Classic Platinum Division, which had 16 teams from five states in the field. The team is led by junior forward Michael Nzei.

Schedule: Our Savior New American vs. The Rock, 7 p.m. today; Our Savior New American vs. DeLaSalle, 5:30 p.m. Friday; Our Savior New American vs. Pierre, 8:30 p.m. Saturday.

Rock High School, Gainesville, Fla.

Coach: Justin Harden, fourth season

Record: 13-1

Notes: The Lions have 10 players being recruited by colleges on every level. Senior Joel Embiid, a 6-foot-11 forward, has signed with Kansas University.

Schedule: The Rock vs. Our Savior New American (NY), 7 p.m. today; The Rock vs. Coronado (Nev.), 7 p.m. Friday.

Pierre T.F. Riggs High School

Coach: Terry Becker, ninth season

Record: 2-3

Notes: Pierre was ranked first in South Dakota preseason polls but has fallen out of the top five this week. The team is led by Zach Hanson, who is a Creighton recruit.

Schedule: Pierre vs. Our Savior New American, 8:30 p.m. Saturday.

Mitchell High School

Coach: Tom Young, first season

Record: 2-4

Notes: The Kernels graduated all of their starters from last season. Senior guard Seth Cavanaugh, who is the team's leading scorer with 12.8 points per game, is the only player who earned playing time last season.

Schedule: Mitchell vs. Coronado, 8:30 p.m. today; Mitchell vs. Sioux Falls O'Gorman, 4 p.m. Saturday.

Sioux Falls Lincoln High School

Coach: Jeff Halseth, fourth season

Record: 3-0

Notes: The Patriots average 73.3 points per game and are led by Nermin Krdzalic, who has 18.7 points per game. Lincoln is ranked No. 4 in the South Dakota poll this week.

Schedule: Lincoln vs. Coronado, 4 p.m. Friday.

Sioux Falls O'Gorman High School

Coach: Derek Robey, eighth season

Record: 2-3

Notes: The Knights played in the classic last season and have won the Class AA state championship for three consecutive years.

Schedule: O'Gorman vs. Mitchell, 4 p.m., Saturday.

Sioux Falls Roosevelt High School

Coach: Lee Taylor, 10th season

Record: 4-0

Notes: The Roughriders jumped to the top of the South Dakota poll this week and placed sixth in last year's Class AA state tournament.

Schedule: Roosevelt vs. The Rock, 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

Sioux Falls Washington High School

Coach: Craig Nelson, first season

Record: 2-1

Notes: The Warriors took fourth place in last year's state tournament but are not ranked in the South Dakota poll this week.

Schedule: Washington vs. La Lumiere, 5:30 p.m. Saturday.

Watertown High School

Coach: Brian Norberg, 10th season

Record: 4-0

Notes: The Arrows are ranked No. 2 in the South Dakota Sportswriters Association poll this week.

Schedule: Watertown vs. La Lumiere, 8:30 p.m. Friday.

White River High School

Coach: Eldon Marshall, 11th season

Record: 5-0

Notes: White River is ranked atop the Class B boys' basketball poll this week. Last season, the Tigers won the Class B state title.

Schedule: White River vs. DeLaSalle, 7 p.m. Saturday.
