Details released in bus crash
MITCHELL, S.D. - Three school students suffered minor injuries when the bus carrying them was struck from the rear by a pick-up on S.D. Highway 38 about 10 miles east of Mitchell on Wednesday, Sept. 26.
The 2006 school bus, driven by Douglas Arthur Guericke, 53, of Alexandria, S.D., was transporting about 15 students. The bus was struck from the rear by a 1999 Ford F-250 pickup driven by Arlo Gene North, 23, of Howard, S.D. The bus was stopped facing west to pick up two children from a rural address on Highway 38. The bus had emergency red lights and side stop sign activated at the time of the crash.
North was distracted for a moment and looked up and saw the stopped school bus. He was wearing a seatbelt and received minor injuries.
Three of the student passengers were taken to a Mitchell hospital for medical evaluation. Two were treated and released. The third was being kept for further observation.
No further information is immediately available.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating. Hanson County Emergency Manager, Hanson County Ambulance and Mitchell Ambulance assisted.
