Small plane that crashed in Pierre was home-built

PIERRE (AP) -- The Federal Aviation Administration says a single-engine airplane that crashed at the Pierre airport was an SQ2000, a plane that can be built from a kit.

The plane crashed on takeoff Tuesday morning and the pilot was killed. He was the only person on board. Authorities have not identified him.

The media reports that the plane was registered to a Pierre man who built it, but authorities have not said if he is the man who died in the crash.

Officials with the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating. The airport remains open

The media reports that officials conducted an annual review of the airport's disaster response plan just days before the crash. The plan was used in the response to the crash.
