Daugaard announces $600,000 for Tri-County Landfill Assoc. project

PIERRE -- The state Board of Water and Natural Resources has approved a $600,000 grant and loan package for the Tri-County Landfill Association to construct a new disposal cell at its regional landfill near Pukwana.

The funding includes a $300,000 grant and $300,000 low-interest loan from the Solid Waste Management Program.

"The regional landfill near Pukwana is nearing capacity in its existing solid-waste disposal cell," Gov. Dennis Daugaard said.

"These funds will help Tri-County Landfill Association upgrade the regional landfill and provide extra capacity to continue to accept municipal waste."

The project involves constructing a 5-acre, solid-waste disposal cell that will provide landfill capacity to accept solid waste through 2023.

The project also includes constructing a leachate collection system to convey leachate to the landfill's storage pond.

The funding will cover the estimated total cost of the project. The loan terms are 2.25 percent interest for seven years.

The Solid Waste Management Program provides grants and loans for solid waste disposal, recycling, and waste tire projects.

The board met Thursday and Friday in Pierre.
