Rep. Carson to be honored by Casey Tibbs Foundation

State Rep. Lance Carson, R-Mitchell, is one of five people who will be honored May 31 at the Casey Tibbs Foundation’s 21st annual Match of Champions Bronc Ride.

Carson will be awarded as honorary arena director. Other honorees who have dedicated much of their lives to the sport of rodeo include Jim Smeenk, of Newell, as match dedication honoree; Jon Mattson, of Deadwood, as honorary chute boss; and Rose Ridley and Kim Ridley, of St. Onge, as co-honorary secretary/timers.

The activities begin at 5 p.m. at the Stanley County Fairgrounds near Fort Pierre for the steak feed and live music by Plains Folk. The steak fry is $12 per plate with a limited number available.

The bronc match starts at 7 p.m. with 30 of the top cowboys in the nation competing in the long round and 10 cowboys in the short go for a $15,000 rider’s purse.

Match of Champions advance tickets are $15 (through May 29). Tickets at the gate are $20, or Gold Buckle reserved seating for $35 (limited number available).

The public is also welcome to see the sculpture garden and the museum at the Casey Tibbs Rodeo Center from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on May 31. Ranchers are encouraged to bring their branding irons to burn their brands into the timbers of the center. Regular fees apply.

Proceeds will benefit the Casey Tibbs South Dakota Rodeo Center.
