Young musician wins regional competition

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- Naomi Powers, 14, of Mitchell, was recently named a winner of the Minnesota Sinfonia's 2014 Young Artist Competition.

Powers began playing violin at age 4 and has studied with Doosook Kim, concertmaster of the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra, for the past five years. Powers has placed in many competitions, including winning first place in the 2011 South Dakota Music Teachers National Association competition. Powers will have a solo performance with the Sinfonia later this year.

The Minnesota Sinfonia is a nonprofit, professional orchestra offering all performances free of admission charges, youth and music education programs to the Twin Cities Metro area.

The 2014 Young Artist Competition was held on March 30 at the University of St. Thomas. String players under the age of 19 performed solo works, hoping to be named the winner of their respective divisions.
