Proposed Catholic changes around the area

The proposed changes to Catholic parishes in the Diocese of Sioux Falls have been worked on for more than five years and are being rolled out to parishioners across the region.

None of the decisions is final at this point. Bishop Paul Swain will make his final decree in the coming weeks and July 1 has been stated as a transition date.

Mitchell deanery

The following changes have been proposed for the parishes inside the Mitchell deanery and would involve sharing a priest:

• Holy Rosary in Tripp would merge with Sacred Heart in Parkston, and Holy Trinity in Ethan would merge with Saints Peter and Paul in Dimock. The two merged parishes would share one priest.

• St. John Neumann in Farmer and Spencer would merge with St. Mary of Mercy in Alexandria. St. Stephen Parish in Bridgewater and St. Martin in Emery would also merge, and the two merged parishes would share one priest.

• St. Michael in Mount Vernon and St. Mary in Stickney would merge with St. John Parish in Plankinton. St. Peter in White Lake would share a priest with the Mount Vernon/Stickney/Plankinton parish.

• St. Ann in Geddes and St. Peter in Platte would share a priest.

• St. Mark in Lake Andes and St. Paul the Apostle in Armour would share a priest.

Yankton deanery

Changes in the Yankton deanery mostly pertain to parishes sharing priests. The following parishes in The Daily Republic's coverage area would share an assigned priest:

• St. John the Baptist in Wagner, Assumption in Dante and St. Paul in Marty.

• St. Mark in Lake Andes and St. Paul the Apostle in Armour.

• St. George in Scotland would include the mergers of smaller churches in Sigel and Lesterville and in Mayfield and Idylwilde, for sharing one pastor.

Brookings deanery

Changes in the Brookings deanery would include the merger of the Epiphany parish and St. Agatha in Howard, and that merged parish would share a priest with St. William of Vercelli in Ramona. In addition, upon the retirement of the current priest, St. Patrick in Montrose and St. Mary in Salem would share a priest.

Pierre-Huron deanery

Mergers in the Pierre-Huron deanery, which includes Kimball, Pukwana, Chamberlain and Wessington Springs, have not yet been officially proposed.
