James' father, Hugh James, was born in 1914 on a homestead in Rock County in the Sandhills of Nebraska and grew up on a ranch in Holt County. In the late 1950s, he purchased property in Boyd County, Nebraska, and built a cabin on it.

According to a Dakota Discovery Museum press release, through James' many visits to Boyd County, she came to love the land. After retirement, she decided retired to start a new life in Nebraska. Since moving to rural Nebraska several years ago, she has resumed creating art, with a focus on the land and artifacts around her family's property.

James draws inspiration from many things; her father's antique rake spokes, Chinese scrolls or ice on barbed wire to create her photocontructions.
