To recognize area students during March, which is National Youth Art Month, the Dakota Discovery Museum is hosting the 2013 Youth Art Show.

The 2013 Youth Art Show will open on March 1 and run through April 6 at the museum, located on the campus of Dakota Wesleyan University at 1300 McGovern Ave., Mitchell. A free artists' reception is planned from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. April 6. Professional artists will be on hand to critique students' work.

Regular museum hours for the exhibit during March will be 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays.

During the exhibit, admission is free for student artists and their immediate families.

Dakota Discovery Museum's news release said Youth Art Month is to emphasize the value of art education for all children and to encourage support for quality school and community art programs, and that the annual exhibit offers South Dakota students the opportunity to show their work in a gallery setting and have it evaluated by professional artists.

"The arts are often considered of limited importance, while in reality they provide children the opportunity to develop skills they will need as adults," the news release said.

"Experience in the arts develops self-esteem and self-expression, as well as appreciation for the work of others. It also helps to develop the critical thinking skills vital in today's quickly changing social environment."

Entries must be submitted, with paperwork, by Feb. 22. Students grades K-12 who live or attend school in South Dakota, including home schools, are eligible. It's $1 per artist. Entry forms are available online at www.dakotadiscovery. com or by calling (605) 996-2122.
