Friend de Coup dinner theater event starts Tuesday

There may be 30 years of show choir, but there’s only four days left to see this year’s show.

Mitchell High School’s show choir dinner theater starts today and continues Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the Corn Palace. Titled “Thirty Years of Show,” MHS Vocal Director Chris Miller said Friend de Coup’s program will consist of this year’s competition set, as well as two additional sets of numbers performed by past show choirs. It’s a continuation of the celebration of this year as the 30th anniversary of show choir in Mitchell, which Miller said will include numbers from the 1990s, as well as some of the more popular or memorable numbers from his tenure show choir director.

“It was really fun,” Miller said of digging out the past performances. “It brought back a lot of memories.”

And not just for Miller. He said students have enjoyed the nostalgia as well -- some of the pieces they’ll perform are songs they watched as children, when they hoped to one day be on stage.

“Now they get a chance to do them, and it’s fantastic,” Miller said. “For some of them, it’s just kind of a dream come true.”

The 30th anniversary celebration also included a first-ever alumni performance at the Show Choir Classic Saturday at the Corn Palace. Miller said more than 60 alumni singer/dancer and instrumentalist alumni returned to the Palace to perform during the classic.

“It was just so fun,” Miller said. “We knew it was going to be cool, but we had no idea it was going to be as cool as it was. Everybody just had the time of their life.”

Dinner theater shows start tonight at 6:30 p.m. with $18 tickets. Thursday, Friday and Saturday’s shows are $20. Shows start at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and at 5 p.m. on Saturday at the Corn Palace. Tickets are available at the Corn Palace box office at 995-8430 or Ticket proceeds are a fundraiser for the show choir.

Miller said each night but Thursday will include a guest show choir performance. John Paul II’s Joyful Noise will perform on Tuesday, Exclamation from Mitchell Middle School will perform on Friday and Maximum Velocity, also from Mitchell Middle School, will perform Saturday.

Tuesday and Thursday the menu includes a stuffed pork chop, garden salad, baked potato, green beans and cupcake. Friday and Saturday will remain the same, except for the main course, which will be chicken cordon bleu, instead of the pork chop.
