ACT announces 2014-15 season

Music, mystery and a little more music will be part of the 2014-15 Mitchell Area Community Theatre season.

“The Producers,” “And Then There Were None,” “Scrooge! The Musical,” “Rumors” and “Brigadoon” will round out the season’s shows, all to be performed at the Pepsi-Cola Theatre in Mitchell.

The first show of the season, “The Producers,” is a musical comedy by Mel Brooks.

A down-on-his-luck Broadway director and accountant team up to create the worst musical ever, oversell the show to sponsors — then close on opening night and run with the funds. This production will take the stage the first two weekends of August.

After a hiatus from mystery, the ACT presents the Agatha Christie classic, “And Then There Were None.” Originally titled after the song “Ten Little Indians,” 10 guests are invited to spend a weekend on an island. While there, each is murdered and an Indian is missing from a centerpiece. Performances are planned for early October.

The success of “White Christmas” in 2012 had the committee looking for another musical for the holiday season. While the story is based on the timeless classic “A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens, “Scrooge! The Musical” is relatively new, written in 1970. Folks might not have had much to sing about in England in 1860, but this musical will make you believe otherwise with songs like “The Beautiful Day” and “Thank You Very Much.”

“Rumors” abound at the end of February and the beginning of March, when that comedy comes to Mitchell. Neil Simon’s play concerns four couples who arrive at the townhouse of the deputy New York City mayor and his wife to attend a party celebrating their 10th wedding anniversary, and comic complications arise.

The season will close in early May 2015 with “Brigadoon,” as two American hikers explore the Scottish highlands and discover an enchanted city, which appears once every 100 years. Familiar songs include “Brigadoon,” ”Almost Like Being in Love” and “I’ll Go Home with Bonnie Jean.”

Season memberships will go on sale April 16. This will be the first opportunity to select your seats for each production in the 2014-2015 season. You can find out more information on these shows or apply to direct a show at or by calling Carm at the ACT at 996-9137.
