LETTER: Renew lease with Camp Arroya Inc.
To the Editor:
I have been following with great interest the discussions about the Mitchell Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department renewing the lease for Camp Arroya. I know several people who are leaders and members of Camp Arroya Inc., and for the last 25 years they have put their heart, soul and money into maintaining and improving this "woodsy retreat" on the north side of Lake Mitchell.
Many of them attended the camp and have wonderful memories of the activities they enjoyed there when young. They continue to create a safe and secluded site for the citizens of the Mitchell community. It is fortunate that the city of Mitchell has Camp Arroya Inc., which is well dedicated to manage this property.
Camp Arroya provides a wide variety of opportunities for camp usage. There is a dock, a swimming beach, indoor banquet tables and chairs, outdoor picnic tables, a craft cottage, the main cabin with two complete functioning modern kitchens, overnight camping areas, the well-maintained nature trail, a tornado shelter, an on-site parking area and a very quiet, secluded area for the groups to enjoy the lakefront and shut out the noise of traffic and gawking passers-by.
The camp is used by many local churches, scout groups, family reunions and celebrations such as graduations and birthday events. The Mitchell Area Arts Council held its May meeting there and enjoyed plein aire (painting on location landscapes) with various media such as watercolor, acrylic, pencil and pastel drawing.
There is a saying, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." Camp Arroya Inc. that manages Camp Arroya is not broke, it serves the Mitchell community, it is well managed and maintained, and equally well used.
It is in the best interests of the citizens of Mitchell to continue to lease Camp Arroya to Camp Arroya Inc. and let those who have been good stewards of the property continue to do so.
