Increases needed in fines for speeding
To the Editor:
I’m thinking of contacting our legislators, and I have come up with a bill that could really put some teeth into those who don’t care how fast they drive or how much money they spend on speeding tickets: first ticket, $50; second, $100; third, $200; fourth, $400; fifth, $800, etc. That should make a person think about driving too fast. If not, they have too much money and don’t worry about how they spend it.
It was a night of tears and laughter as community members gathered to raise money for the Mitchell Area Safehouse.
The tears came as attendees watched a domestic abuse victim tell her story in a film, and when Wendy Figland, Safehouse director, reflected on the abuse that continues to happen.
But the laughs outnumbered the sadness as people watched 18 volunteers — all men — walk, stomp or occasionally stumble in high heels as they delivered food to each of the 27 tables.
