RAPID CITY – Wagner is making another run at a state Class B wrestling title.
The Red Raiders, who won three consecutive state championships starting in 2008, are in first place after the tournament’s opening day.
They have 63 points and lead second-place Webster, which has 59 points.
Tyler Dion (126), David Kocer (145), Alex Kocer (152) and Derek Dickerson (160) each went unbeaten Friday at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center. They’ll all be wrestling in the semifinals today, looking to earn a berth in state championship matches.
Ask almost any Class B wrestling coach, and they’ll say Tri-Valley is the favorite at this weekend’s Class B state tournament.
Today in Rapid City is the first of a two-day state tournament, where 16-man brackets will be narrowed down to a state champion. Last year, Webster knocked off three-time defending champion Wagner in Aberdeen for the team championship.
