County officials fine-tune budget for 2011
The Davison County commissioners continued fine-tuning the 2011 budget Tuesday during their regular meeting at the courthouse in Mitchell. Speedy demolition of Tower Building to cost $35,000 extra
That was the result of a 3-2 vote Tuesday in which the Davison County commissioners, during their regular weekly meeting at the courthouse in Mitchell, awarded a $550,581 demolition contract to Soukup Construction, of Sioux Falls.
“Yes, I know it’s $35,000 more and that’s unfortunate,” said Commission Chairman David Weitala, referring to a another bid that was $35,581 less.

Worries about tainted bidding delay Tower Building demolition
A potentially tainted bidding process caused the Davison County commissioners Tuesday to suspend bid awards for demolition of the Tower Building.The commissioners voted 4 to 1 at the courthouse — with Commissioner Jerry Fischer dissenting — to table bid awards until 10:30 a.m. next Tuesday to give competing bidders an opportunity to offer input similar to that presented to the commissioners by bidder Bryan VanderPol last Thursday.

County opens Tower bids
That’s what the county commissioners learned Tuesday after opening four bids for the job that ranged from a low of $515,000 from Mitchell-based Vanderpol Dragline to a high of $669,818 by Schoenfelder Construction, also of Mitchell. The commissioners took no action on the bids.

Looking beyond the demolition
Time is nearing for demolition of the old Methodist Hospital building. Interested contractors will meet today for a pre-bid conference to discuss project requirements for its removal.
The commission hired Puetz to develop planning options for the site once the old building comes down.

Official not in favor of city-county facility to replace old Tower
Davison County Commissioner Jerry Fischer said Tuesday at the courthouse that he is not keen on a joint city-county building to replace the now-vacant Tower Building on Miller Avenue.The comment came after regular business and during informal discussions on a new building.
Chairman Dave Weitala said it was his understanding that the city of Mitchell would consider leasing space in a new county building. That did not sit well with Fischer.

Winter window missed for Tower Building demolition
In a worst-case scenario, it could be next winter before the Tower Building comes down, but county officials hope it won’t come to that.Bid documents are nearing completion for the demolition of the former Methodist Hospital on Miller Avenue, County Maintenance Director Mark Ruml told the Davison County Commission Tuesday.

County’s Tower plans moving forward
The Tower Building, the county’s biggest cash sinkhole, is a step closer to demolition following the Davison County Commission’s receipt of an asbestos inspection report Tuesday.The report by Geotek Engineering & Testing Services, Sioux Falls, confirmed the presence of the carcinogenic mineral in 40 of 83 samples removed from the building. After a brief discussion, commissioners immediately voted to solicit bids for an asbestos removal project.
