In order to help our state’s fiscal woes, I joined in introducing a common-sense change that brings more revenue to South Dakota and helps Main Street businesses be more competitive. Push for Internet sales tax renewed
Many sales-tax states, including South Dakota, are hoping their tumbling sales-tax revenues will prod Congress into finally allowing mandatory state taxation of purchases on the Internet.The Streamlined Sales Tax Governing Board, which includes South Dakota and 22 other states, is trying to revive old legislation that would authorize states to require sales-tax payments from “remote sellers” — companies that lack a physical presence in the state where the sale is made, such as some Internet and catalog retailers.

The down economy may have hammered sales tax collections nationwide in 2009, but South Dakota fared better than most states.A Wednesday report in The Wall Street Journal showed that 22 states saw 2009 thirdquarter revenues drop more than 10 percent in 2009, with Alaska posted a U.S.-worst 65 percent revenue decline. Only three states — Nevada, New Hampshire and Rhode Island — posted quarterly increases.

Council plans letter to state about sales-tax return errors
Be warned, South Dakota Department of Revenue and Regulation: The Mitchell City Council has its sights on you. The council’s Finance Committee — a panel made up entirely of the eight members of the City Council — voted unanimously Monday evening at City Hall to send a letter to the state department.
