More building permits were issued in Mitchell in 2010 than any year since 2006, and those projects had a greater value than any year since 2005.
“We’re busy,” Mitchell Building Official/Inspector John Hegg said. “Always busy this year.”
The city collected $70,006.93 in permit fees, the highest amount in the last six years. These numbers indicate a revitalized local economy as the area, state and country struggle to emerge from the great recession.
A proposed tax increment financing district in Mitchell will be discussed during a Planning and Zoning Commission meeting today.
The district’s plan was submitted by ProBuild of Mitchell, formerly United Building Center. It was reviewed by the Tax Increment Financing Review Committee on Nov. 30.
A TIF is a development plan that uses revenue from future taxes on improved properties to pay for public improvements. This proposed TIF has been termed District 15 in Mitchell.
Developers are asking for a special taxing district to help develop a 44-lot residential area in northwest Mitchell.
ProBuild of Mitchell is planning the development at Lakeview Second Addition, a 16.53-acre area bordered by North Ohlman Street on the west, Sawgrass Avenue on the south and Thunderbird Drive on the east. The development is adjacent to the existing Lakeview First Addition, just to the south, and is just west of Lakeview Golf Course.
