PARKSTON — Cole Donahue hit a sacrifice fly to score Ty Kinneberg in the eighth inning to lift Parkston over Hanson County 4-3 in the first round of the Class B high school region baseball playoffs Monday in Parkston.
ALCESTER — Megan Bultsma recorded a double-double for the third straight game to help Mount Vernon/Plankinton to a 59-30 victory over Freeman Academy.
Bultsma scored 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Titans, who shot 43 percent from the field.
ARMOUR — Ali Kuca had 21 points and nine rebounds, Jessa Doom had 13 points and Gina Soukup added 10 points to help Wagner beat Tripp-Delmont/Armour 60-37 Monday in a high school girls’ basketball game.
When it comes to the state amateur baseball tournament, it’s not unusual for teams to make use of one or two of their American Legion players.
Courtesy running for the catcher is a popular option for Legion players, and some lucky ones may even get an at-bat or two late in a game. Once in awhile, a star pitcher is even called upon to make a big start on the mound.
Rarely, however, is there a team that utilizes its Legion players like the Platte Killer Tomatoes are during this year’s tournament, and rarely has it paid off as much as it has for Platte.
RAPID CITY — Platte-Geddes faced a very familiar foe Saturday night in the championship game at the Class A tournament.
The Panthers took on Madison in the 2008 title game and won, and P-G also beat the Bulldogs earlier this year at the Hanson Classic.
The P-G and Madison seniors have been rivals since the third grade, and it was only fitting that they meet one final time for the Class A title.
